Stockholm County Council invites professional artists to apply for a sketch assignment for a public art commission for an open outdoor space adjacent to one of the new buildings in the hospital area.

Saint Göran Hospital is undergoing an extensive renovation as part of a strategic investment to meet the future requirements of hospital care. New buildings are being erected adjacent to existing ones. The extensions are intended to answer to the needs of general and flexible care units for treatment, inpatient as well as outpatient care. An important element of this major investment is artistic commissions. Artistic expressions will provide the hospital environment with a human dimension. The commissions will continue a tradition of site-specific art at Saint Göran Hospital. The art will follow the movement of people through the entire facility. In addition to near-patient environments, there will be art commissions in communal areas such as corridors, lift lobbies and entrances.

The building work will be executed in stages from 2017 to 2019/2020. A number of substantial art commissions are planned for the hospital during this period.

Site conditions

A new hospital building is being erected in the area, adjacent to an existing building. An open space will be created in between the buildings, creating an outdoor courtyard with an airspace. On one side of the courtyard is the new 7-storey Building 45; on the other side the existing 4-storey Building 40. In both buildings there will be mixed healthcare activities, whose working rooms and patient rooms will face the courtyard. The courtyard has been identified as a suitable point of departure for an artistic intervention. The commission is specifically about working with sculpture in a large scale.

The Art Commission

In general, the commission entails identifying possibilities for a standing sculptural artwork to be placed on the above-mentioned courtyard.

The art commission should lend character and identity to this spatiality. Depending on how densely built-up the entire hospital area will be, the view from the various floors facing this inner courtyard will be restricted to the adjacent building. An artwork on the site may provide an interesting focal point regardless of whether one views it from the ground floor or the top floor.

Preparatory work for the placement of the sculpture includes the casting of a concrete slab of circa 9 x 6 metres. This surface can harbour one or more bases with attachments for the placement of the artwork. The site will be prepared with an electricity supply to provide the artwork with lighting, either by external fittings or by an integrated internal light source.

In dialogue with the building constructor it has been decided that the artwork may have a total weight of no more than 5,000 kg and a maximum height of 15 metres.

There is a building crane on site that may be used to install the artwork in the courtyard. Access to this building crane is a governing factor in the final delivery of the completed artwork.

If the artist who is awarded the commission so desires, a dialogue with a landscape architect may be initiated.

Budget

The fee for the sketch assignment is 40,000 SEK excluding VAT.

The execution of the public art commission is budgeted at 980,000 SEK excluding VAT. The artist is responsible for the budget. The budget must cover all costs connected to the production of the artwork, such as the artist’s fee, copyright costs, material costs, subcontractors/assistants, travel, transportation, insurance and storage until the time of installation.

Certain costs in relation to the installation of the artwork and preparatory work for the electricity supply and, if applicable, lighting will be financed by an exterior budget.

Stockholm County Council Culture Administration often works with parallel sketch assignments in which two or more artists present proposals and where one party will be awarded the commission to execute the work. After assessing the submitted proposals, Stockholm County Council Culture Administration reserves the right to eliminate the parallel process and award the commission to one artist or artist group.
