Invitation for a Sketch Assignment, corridor, Saint Göran Hospital

Stockholm County Council invites professional artists to apply for a sketch assignment for a central corridor that connects the new buildings with the old ones in the hospital area.

Saint Görans Hospital is undergoing an extensive renovation as part of a strategic investment to meet the future requirements of hospital care. New buildings are to be constructed adjacent to existing ones. The extensions are meant to fulfil the needs of general and flexible care units for treatment, for both inpatient and outpatient care. An important element of this major investment are artistic commissions. Artistic expressions are intended to add a human dimension to the hospital environment. The commissions will continue a tradition of site-specific art at Saint Görans Hospital. The art will follow the movement of people through the entire facility. In addition to near-patient environments, there will be art commissions in communal areas such as corridors, lift lobbies and entrances.

The building work will be carried out in stages from 2017 to 2019/2020. A number of substantial art commissions are planned for the hospital during this period.

Site Conditions

A corridor on the entrance floor has been identified as suitable for an art commission. In total, the commission comprises three, predetermined wall surfaces, and a large surface in the ceiling where there are further possibilities for an artistic intervention. Additional surfaces may be discussed, such as plastic film on glass surfaces.

The Art Commission

In general, the commission comprises:

  • Placement of artworks on three predetermined wall surfaces in the corridor. The corridor is an important passageway for patients, visitors and staff. For this reason, several wall surfaces will be equipped with signage and direction information signs. The artist who will create a proposal for these sites in the corridor must take into consideration and adapt their approach to the general design and signage programme.

  • Proposal for a sculptural artwork in the ceiling, at a junction in the corridor. This junction is the space where two central corridors meet and where patients, visitors and staff can move between the main entrance and the wards in the hospital. In this location, artworks must be designed with the point of departure in the lighting requirements. Consultation with the project’s lighting consultants is part of the assignment.

The art commission should lend character and identity to the spaces. It should have a coherent expression, while the different surfaces should be provided with distinct identities, perhaps both visually and from the point of view of tactility. Art interventions in hospital corridors are restricted by factors such as accessibility, durability and hygiene. The artwork are not be integrated into the built environment but should consist of flexible and removable elements to suit the hospital’s functions.

For general information about our art commissions and requirements, please see frequently asked questions on artistic commissions here.

Budget

The fee for the sketch assignment is 30,000 SEK excluding VAT.
The execution of the public art commission is budgeted at 670,000 SEK excluding VAT. The artist is responsible for the budget. The budget must cover all costs connected to the production of the artwork, such as the artist’s fee, copyright costs, material costs, subcontractors / assistants, travel, transportation, insurance and storage until the time of installation. Certain costs in relation to the installation of the artwork and preparatory work for the electricity supply and, if applicable, lighting will be financed from a separate budget.

Stockholm County Council Culture Administration often works with parallel sketch assignments in which two or more artists present proposals and where one part will be awarded the commission to execute the work. After assessing the submitted proposals, Stockholm County Council Culture Administration reserves the right to eliminate the parallel process and award the commission to one artist or artist group.
